Sterling Nano Review

Nano 8.9 XEROS your durable lightweight companion
Sterling consistently delivers on durability and performance in their Nano series, and the latest iteration-the Nano 8.9mm Xeros-continues that trend. As a certified single, half, and twin rope, the Nano 8.9 is built for versatility, making it suitable for everything from alpine link-ups to long multi-pitch rock routes. It features Sterling’s Xeros dry treatment, which is UIAA-certified for water resistance and permanently integrated into the rope fibers, improving longevity and performance in wet or variable conditions.
Weighing in at just 52 g/m, the Nano is impressively light for a single-rated rope and is easy to pack for long approaches or remote climbs. Its 8.9mm diameter offers a great balance between weight savings and compatibility with most belay devices, though some extra care is warranted with devices not optimized for thinner ropes.
Each time I’ve used the Nano-across several generations-it’s delivered consistent performance in terms of durability and abrasion resistance. It holds up exceptionally well to frequent use on rock, especially in alpine or guiding contexts where long-term wear matters. The low static elongation (7%) adds a bit more security when moving in short-roping terrain or in situations where rope stretch is less desirable.
That said, the rope tends to feel stiff and “cable-y,” even after break-in. So, for routes with cramped belays, I prefer something more supple that stacks and handles more fluidly. But if your priority is a lightweight, durable rope with excellent weather resistance and triple certification, the Nano 8.9mm Xeros is a solid, dependable choice.
